Chapter 14

Chiefly Speaking

I hated him more with every passing breath. She was mine and I knew she was frolicking with that vile wolf every moment I wasn’t there to take her away. I know I’d been a little rough on my Opal, what with the divorce and me marrying that floozy. I’d regretted the divorce and the marriage, and the floozy, well let’s just say I didn’t need a divorce to remarry. I’d missed Opal almost as soon as the ink was dry on the divorce papers. I’d kept her under my thumb while I tried to find a way to get the old Opal back. I would have changed her to a vampire, even though she wouldn’t be the fresh faced girl I wanted back, but she’d refused.

Can you imagine that she refused me? I had so much to offer her that I felt she was being ungrateful so I punished her. It could have been worse, the mental anguish wasn’t half of what I could have subjected her to. I began to believe she might not love me anymore, not even in that less than passionate way she once had. I’d become an important person, didn’t she understand that? We could live forever and only answer to our master. It wasn’t too bad until Chief took over.

Now he was making me wait while that lowlife dog was playing with my woman. It was unacceptable. And what was wrong with those wardens? I told them where he was and he escaped, again. Did I have to do their job for them? I wanted him gone and they were a useful tool, or they would be if they did what they should be doing.

“Hello, is this the warden’s office?” I asked.

“Yes, sir. May I help you?” It sounded like a young pup answering the phones.

“Is there someone older that can help me?”

“I assure you, Sir, I am qualified and I am also the only one here right now.”

I would have to take a chance on this young pup. My patience was at an end. “You have a leak in your office. The person met with Chief right after you received the last tip. Can’t you people catch a spy? There’s no point in giving you a tip until you catch your traitor.” I hung up in a huff. I was helping them and they couldn’t catch Chief. What did that say about their skill? Nothing good!

I would be going to meet with Chief soon. He wanted to explain his plan for Opal to me. A nervous butterfly floated around in my stomach as I wondered if he was on to me. He would kill me if he was and it would all be over. I needed to arm myself in a way he couldn’t sense. He was dangerous and had given the wardens a merry chase for months now. Every time I thought the end was in sight, he got away. It wasn’t like I could take him out myself or I would.
